Creates an open loop by revealing just enough information to make the reader need to close it — the most reliable scroll-stopper in existence.
Why it works
The curiosity gap is the workhorse of hook writing. It exploits the Zeigarnik Effect — our brain's inability to ignore incomplete information. By presenting a tantalizing piece of information without resolving it, you create an open loop that the reader feels compelled to close. 'The one word that doubled my email open rates' works because you've shown the result but hidden the mechanism. The reader's brain itches until they get the answer.
When to use
Use curiosity gap hooks everywhere — they're the most versatile pattern. Email subject lines, YouTube thumbnails, social media posts, blog headlines. Anywhere you need to earn a click, a read, or a view. They pair especially well with numbers and insider-knowledge.
